The Darhad Valley and surrounding mountains in northern Mongolia represent a culturally and biologically diverse region. The area is poorly documented and is already facing increasing pressure from climate change and economic exploitation. In March of 2013 our team will embark on a survey for wildlife, with a focus on wolverine, an indicator species for climate change. A winter wildlife survey has never been conducted in the area and a mega-transect through the region will offer the opportunity to document species that are elusive and hard to detect during the summer. We will carry our supplies in backpacks, and plan to meet locals at four strategically planned resupply points on average of once a week throughout the journey. Through National Geographic Education and Montana State University, we will engage thousands of students who will follow our progress throughout the journey. -- Join the expedition now! |
